closed groups and open groups

These terms are sometimes applied to social groups or organizations which have (respectively) fairly impermeable boundaries, and therefore little interaction with outsiders, or permeable boundaries with few barriers to relations with outsiders. Thus, there can be open and closed religious sects, clubs, committees, military élites, and so forth.
